Obituaries Carl Dean Ohrt

Carl Dean Ohrt, 94, of Marshalltown, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, August 28, 2026, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 11, 2026, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Vinton with Pastor Anne Williams officiating. Burial, with full military rites, will be at Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Friday at the church. Van Steenhuyse-Teahen Funeral Home is caring for Carl and his family.

Carl was born August 15, 1932, in rural Vinton, the son of Albert and Mildred (Smith) Ohrt. He graduated from Garrison High School in 1950. Following graduation, he proudly served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955. On October 23, 1955, Carl was united in marriage to Marilyn Baldwin at First Presbyterian Church in Vinton. Together they enjoyed nearly 71 years of marriage. Throughout his working years, Carl held various jobs, including delivering milk, auto parts sales, security, and as an escort at Rockwell Collins.

Carl enjoyed “tinkering” in the garage, camping, and country music. He especially enjoyed listening to country music and dancing the “two-step” with Marilyn at the Garrison Legion Hall. He and Marilyn enjoyed trips to Branson and Nashville. Most of all, Carl enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Carl is survived by his wife, Marilyn of Marshalltown; two sons: Roger (Lisa) Ohrt of La Porte City and Scott (Wanda) Ohrt of Cedar Rapids; two daughters: Sheri (Mike) Swallom of Urbana and Mari Houck of Marion; son-in-law, Ron Henry of Cedar Falls; 12 grandchildren, who knew him as “Papa”; 20 great-grandchildren, who knew him as “Papa O”; and sister-in-law, Frances Novotny of Marion.

Carl was preceded in death by his daughter, Lori Henry; sisters: LaVonne Ohrt and Arlene Ohrt; brothers: Russell (LaVonne) Ohrt, Vernon (Ilma) Ohrt, and Keith (Stella Mae) Ohrt; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Roy and Carilyn Pollock; and brother-in-law, Duane Novotny.

A memorial fund has been established.
