Events and Activities Plant a Seed, Read at the La Porte City Library's summer reading program

La Porte City Library's summer reading program, “Plant a Seed, Read,” has wrapped up for the year. We had an amazing 100 participants this summer and 64 book log participants! Everyone had fun spinning the wheel to win prizes like candies, vouchers for Tootsies Ice Cream & More, or free cookies from Casey’s. The summer art wall was filled with beautiful creations from our community, and we’re so proud of all the talent we saw. To celebrate the end of the program, the library hosted a sweet ice cream social for all who took part. It was wonderful to see individuals of all ages come together to celebrate their literacy and support their community!

This year, our theme highlighted the importance of farming and how it connects to our everyday lives. In rural Iowa, we know farms grow the food that nourishes us, and just like that, the library helps foster ideas that enrich our minds.

Both food and stories help us feel connected to our families, culture, economy, environment, and community. Our library programs like Harvesting Basics with Master Gardeners and ISU Extension’s ‘Wonders of Nature’ storytime and activities really showcased how important nature and the outdoors are in our lives.

Library staff truly hope you enjoyed this year’s program, and we can’t wait to see you again next summer for another fun reading adventure! Please remember to read at least one book before the commencement of our next summer library reading program. Literacy connects us all.
