The following are just a snippet of the information the 1954-55 “School Journals” provided.
Three Earn Distinction
Three senior girls - - Revanne Jenks, Patsy Nie (Hamling) and Verna Sellen - - have achieved the honor of acceptance into the Quill and Scroll. This is a national honorary journalism society and high qualifications must be met by both the school and the individuals to become a member. One must be in the upper one-third of his class, rank as Junior or Senior, and possess leadership and personality requirements. The quality and amount of published material of each candidate are considered and passed by the Quill and Scroll Board of Journalism.
This is the first year that IBSSS has attained such a charter and everyone feels it is a privilege to qualify for membership. The succeeding Journal staffs will strive to equal the outstanding work of these three girls.
IBSSS Is Host for Tournament
On February 14 and 15 the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School was host to the Fifth Annual Wrestling Tournament of the Midwest Activities Association of Schools for the Blind. This was Iowa’s second year as host for the tournament. Next year the tournament will be held at the Arkansas School for the Blind.
Ten schools participated again this year which included one new member, the South Dakota School for the Blind. Other school participating were Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Texas. The Oklahoma school withdrew from the tournament because of an epidemic of influenza.
New Mexico was once again crowned the champion after taking first place with 63 points. Arkansas took second with 53 and Texas captured third with 46. The remaining school finished in the following order: Missouri 31, Iowa 28, Kansas 11, Nebraska 0 and South Dakota 0.
The Iowa Rams were a determined team throughout the tournament. Tom Schiebeler broke his wrist in the quarter final while wrestling (Ogburn) or Arkansas in a very exciting match. Jim Bright took second place in the 154 pound division. Bobby Kapler did a magnificent job and won a third place medal for his efforts. Bruce Johnson and Virgil Lee also took third place. John Hamling was the Rams only other winner. He decisioned Brown of Kentucky 13 -2 in consolation semi-finals. Hamling received fourth place as Lemke of Minnesota decisioned him.
Following the finals the participants, officials, coaches, faculty advisers and cheerleaders were served a lunch sponsored by the George G. Luckey Post of the American Legion.
