Virtual Local Food Leader 101 Certification offers learning, engagement opportunities for food systems practitioners








The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Food Systems Team is accepting registrations for Virtual Local Food Leader 101, an online course designed to help participants develop knowledge, skills and connections for effective contribution to community food systems initiatives.

Through five learning modules, participants develop a foundation for local food systems work by exploring structure and common language, understanding dignity and involvement in food systems and building skills in facilitation, leadership, planning and evaluation.

The course will run from Sept. 30 to Dec. 16 and combines self-paced, online learning with five virtual learning circles that provide opportunities for discussion, reflection and peer connection.

“Local food systems work is complex, so having a shared understanding of how they function and how to positively contribute is valuable,” said Krista Smith, food systems certification coordinator with ISU Extension and Outreach. “Local Food Leader 101 provides that shared foundation while giving participants practical tools and connections with peers to help them move from understanding to meaningful action within their local food system.”

Beginning food systems practitioners and experienced professionals are welcome to participate, as well as community volunteers, nonprofit professionals, educators, local government representatives, producers and residents interested in strengthening local and regional food systems.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a certificate of completion and become eligible for more advanced training through Local Food Leader 201.

Local Food Leader 101 can be offered as a dedicated cohort for organizations, coalitions, food policy councils and other community-based groups to apply course concepts directly to their own work and community priorities.
