6th St. between A and 1st Ave. This gives a whole new meaning to Hitting the Road.

There are several things that haven't changed in Vinton from the time I was a little girl until now.

One of those things are the brick streets.

The sound they make when you drive over them is something you won't here in most towns.

Back in the good ol' days when kids could lay in the back window of the car and enjoy the ride from there, I remember laying there. We'd ride through town and I spent the time looking at the sky and trying to figure out where we were going. It's probably why I had a good sense of direction as I grew older. Using just the view of the sky and landmarks that you could see from looking up, I could picture where we were going.

Another sense I'd use was sound. The sound of the railroad tracks, the sound of the courthouse clock, (which is another topic we need to discuss) and the sound of the brick road.

As a kid, I loved those roads.

As an adult, I hate them.

Sure they are fun to look at and a bit nostalgic to see.

However, from the time I was a child to now, this gal has had several surgeries and is now the one paying for the car repairs.

These roads are not fun.

Every dip either makes me cringe and subconsciously hold my insides together or grimace as the bottom of the car hits if I forget to straddle the uneven road correctly.

Don't get me wrong, I love the look of the bricks, but perhaps it's time to repurpose those bricks into the new walking trail as a decorative border or something.

These roads were not made for Iowa weather nor the tons of weight that are put on them, which is obvious from the ruts worn in the road.

They sure weren't made for small cars that need to get from point A to point B. I have no idea how many times I've heard the bottom of my car scrape the bricks. Of course, it happened more if I had a car full of people, but still, it never happens on a nice smooth road.

I understand the sentimental feeling that everyone has for the roads, but sometimes it's time to let the sentiment go in exchange for cement.

6th Street between A and 1st Avenue. This bulge in the brick road is so bad that it has to be marked to warn drivers of the danger.

P.S. This is NOT a reflection on our street department! They have the impossible task of trying to keep our streets useable and that's hard to do when dealing with, well this.

I have always loved the brick roads, particularly the sound it makes, but I also agree that it’s time to get rid of them. I feel they are a liability, and safety of drivers and the vehicles is concerning. I also agree that those bricks could be used for something better like a trail.
