News Private First-Class Hector Albert Cafferata Jr. Remembered

On Tuesday July 28, 2026, the Benton County American Legion and Benton County American Legion Auxiliary met at the recently remodeled Thomas F. Bevins Post 148 Van Horne American Legion Hall for dinner and their monthly meeting.

After dinner Vinton’s own Living History Presenter Alex Vasquez honored the attendees with his in-character interpretation of Medal of Honor recipient Private First-Class Hector Albert Cafferata Jr. of the United States Marine Corps Reserve. Cafferata received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War on November 28, 1950.

Vazquez later read to the audience the Declaration of Impendence and the November 21, 1864, letter from President Abraham Lincoln to Lydia Bixby, who had lost five sons in the Civil War. The letter honored the fallen soldiers of the Civil War and their families.
