As a way of giving back to the local communities, Storey Kenworthy team members across the state are encouraged to nominate qualified non-profits. Five organizations are selected on an annual basis as the featured non-profit. Instead of choosing a free gift as a thank you for a large order, customers may choose to have Storey Kenworthy donate to the featured non-profit.

Lu Karr, from the Vinton location, nominated Operation Backpack. She noted in her application that no child should be hungry, yet 1 in 7 children under 18 in Iowa experience food insecurity.

Operation Backpack was started in the Vinton Shellsburg School district in 2014 by 2 high school students. Today it continues to be the only student run program in the state. Each week a bag of healthy food and snacks are sent home with nearly 100 children, in grades K-5. The food is intended for the student, and not meant to supplement the family meals.

In those early years, Kurt and Lu Karr with Monkeytown offered to assist with delivery. Monthly, one of the delivery team picked up the food from Hacap in Cedar Rapids and returned it to Vinton for packaging. The packaged food was transported to Shellsburg Elementary by that same delivery team twice a month. When Storey Kenworthy acquired Monkeytown in September of 2017 they were anxious to continue to offer assistance to Operation Backpack and are now pleased to donate a check for $1,403.00 to this important cause.

Nicole Schminke and Lu Karr presented a check to four of the leaders of Operation Backpack including, (L to R) Sonnie Evans, Alyssa Reynolds, Raeleigh Schulte and Leah Bohnsack.
