Benton County Treasurer, Kelly Geater has served Benton County for 24 years, 21 as treasurer.

On Tuesday, she made her intention to step down as treasurer, to the Benton County Supervisors.

She said, "I want to let the people of Benton County know that it has been an honor and privilege to serve them for the past 24 years. Thank You All!"

We'll definitely miss this smiling face in the courthouse, best wishes!

Now what happens?

After Geater's official resignation, the session of the office of Treasurer is held by the County Auditor in case of a vacancy.

The position will then be filled by the Board of Supervisors unless a special election is called. The appointment made by the Board would be done in writing and submitted to the County Auditor’s office. If the vacancy is going to be filled by appointment, the appointment must be made within 40 days after the vacancy occurs.

A vacancy would last until the end of a term, or the next time that the county is called or an election, except a primary election. To fill this position by election it would have to appear on a General Election ballot in November to fill the vacancy.

Within 14 days of the publication (Editor's note: Publication means in a state-recognized newspaper, which Vinton Today is not) to fill the vacancy or after the appointment is made, a petition can be filed with the Auditor to request a special election to fill the vacancy. The petition would have to be signed by 10% of the number of votes cast in the county during the preceding general election.
