"Stop the Bleed" classes will be offered on July 3rd, from 6-8:00 p.m. at the North Benton Ambulance, 704 W. 4th St. in Vinton.

"Stop The Bleed", is a class offered free of charge to any area resident interested in training for the unthinkable emergency situation of a severe wound.

Braxton Morrison pictured, presented these classes most recently to members of the Vinton Shellsburg Community School districts for injuries received that require more than just a bandaid, the staff participated in the class learning how to use packing gauze as well as tourniquets, how to apply pressure to a wound and wound packing.

Demonstrating proper procedures and explaining the hows and whys of wound care, while not a pleasant topic to ponder, also prepares you in case you are faced with such an emergency.

Teaming up with a member of the Vinton Police Department, the officer and Morrison answered questions and demonstrated various situations and how to manage the care of a victim of a car accident or other situation.

The goal is to get as many people in Benton County trained to respond as possible.

With the donation of a training kit by Melissa Smith of Virginia Gay Hospital the training can continue.

Those who take the class receive a certificate as well as the opportunity to purchase a response kit at a discount, personalized how you'd like or the ability to order standard kits online.

If you haven't taken the class, and even if you think you'll never need it, it doesn't hurt to be prepared. Having a team trained and available in any organization is a good policy to have.
